In 2024, Chicagoans embraced bikes and e-scooters, setting a new record of over 11 million rides on micromobility services like Divvy, Lime, and Spin.
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) initially reported 10 million rides, but later clarified that the actual number was 11,028,554, of which 6,681,480 were on Divvy bikes — also a new annual record for the system.
By comparison, the total number of bike and scooter rides in 2023 was 8,745,481.
Green Transportation Is Growing in Popularity
Bikes and e-scooters are growing in popularity due to their affordability, eco-friendliness, and convenience. They help avoid traffic jams, parking issues, and are a low-cost alternative to cars.
Additionally, Divvy bikes offer additional benefits, especially in the winter: riders don’t have to worry about storage, safety, or maintenance, and built-in lights and chain guards make riding more comfortable.
Infrastructure Development
In 2024, CDOT was aggressively expanding its Divvy station network, installing 400 new stations in the Far South, Southwest, and Northwest neighborhoods. The goal is to have four stations per square mile throughout Chicago.
Special attention was paid to creating stations near transportation hubs, such as the CTA Orange Line stop at Midway, the Green Line at Damen, and the new Metra station at Peterson/Ridge.
Divvy for Everyone Program
CDOT also reported an increase in enrollment in the Divvy for Everyone program, which offers a discounted membership for $5. Enrollment has quadrupled since 2020. The program is available to residents whose annual income is $35,310 or less and includes discounted rates on bikes and scooters.
Bike Path Development
Chicago has added more bike paths in the last two years than ever before. In 2023, more than 50 miles of paths were added, including 27 miles of protected bike lanes. The same pace of work continues in 2024.
Chicago is on track to create a greener, more convenient, and more accessible environment for all its residents.
